Summer has officially arrived!  Here in Florida, that means that we start spending more time enjoying the outdoors. (But appreciating the ability to retreat to air conditioning when necessary...) And I'm guessing that desire to be outside and enjoy some beautiful sun soaked days is applicable across the country. This month, I'm going to share with you some great gardening, grilling and drink recipes to get your summer into full swing.

Many of us spend time working on our lawns and shrubs, because with the rain and warmer weather, they seem to be growing and need tending to endlessly. But if you're like me, you lack a green thumb most of the year, even more so when the humid temperatures show up. I can never seem to come up with a combination of plants or flowers that will live more than a day or two before wilting away. Fortunately, I've found a great website that provides some gardening ideas that are simple, easy to maintain and most of all, will thrive in the hotter summer temperatures. Check out Florida Yards   This is a wonderful, comprehensive site that really provides pretty much everything you need to know to grown and maintain beautiful flora and fauna not only here in the Sunshine State, but anyplace where a green thumb becomes a challenge during the summer months.

After all that work on tending to your yard and making it look great, you're going to be hungry and thirsty. Summer means it's time to dust off that grill, get outside and get to cooking. I came across this great selection of grilling ideas from Country Living magazine. If it's burgers, hot dogs, a vegetarian dish, or you enjoy seafood or are looking for some great sides to share at your next cookout…this article has it all. From steaks to fish, from pizza to dessert, your grill can provide you with a never ending supply of great offerings this summer Country Living Best Grilling Recipes  And remember that with grilling comes great responsibility so make sure if you're tending to a campfire somewhere like a park, the beach or a campsite that you ensure all the embers are out before you leave the area. And for you home grilling folks, make sure your charcoal is completely cool or turn off your fuel source before leaving your grill unattended.

We've covered the cooking, but what about staying hydrated? Water is obviously a great way to ensure that, but what if you're looking for a beverage with a little more flavor or zing? Whether you enjoy iced coffee, iced tea, a spritzer or something with a little more punch, I’ve found a great selection of recipes that will wet your whistle, cool you off and make you laugh in the face of the summer heat and humidity. Check out the Food Network Top 50 Summer Drinks

So now that you've read all these suggestions to get your summer started off on the right foot, turn the computer off and get outside and enjoy yourself! Because before you know it, the summer sun will start to set a little earlier, there will be a chill in the air and fall will be knocking at our door. For us in Florida, that's still a good five to six months away, but it just reminds us to enjoy these summer months while we can!
